Lighting Expert Witnesses

Lighting is equipment used in the home, workplace, theater, or street to producing light. It is also refers to how those sources of light are used and arranged for different effects. In the home, there are three basic types of lighting. General lighting (chandeliers, ceiling and wall mounted, and track lighting) provides overall illumination that allows people to see and walk safely. Task lighting provides glare free, bright light that prevents eyestrain while reading, sewing and other hobbies. Accent lighting creates drama and accentuates paintings, sculptures and other valuable possessions. Lighting is also important in industry. Halogen lights provide sharper color and is used under cabinets and can lighting. Fluorescent lighting provides a cold, flat, blue light used in large areas. LED lighting is long lasting, energy efficient and provides directional light. In the theatre, different types of lighting fulfill different functions. Floodlights illuminate large areas and fill shadowed areas of the stage. Soft lamps are used for diffused lighting that wraps around the stage to reduce shadows. Broad lights are small lights surrounded by a box like container that are used to lighten shadows in small areas. Fixed focus lighting covers wide areas of the stage, and spotlights project light beams onto one area or figure for emphasis. The most common type of street lighting is the high-pressure sodium lamp, which produces the most amount of light and used the least amount of electricity. LEDs are starting to be used more for street lighting for their increased efficiency and long-life expectancy. However, they are more expensive than the high-pressure sodium lighting.
